TDE Fan Appreciation Week Commences With Ab-Soul

TDE Fan Appreciation Week has officially begun with a new freestyle from Ab-Soul. The Black Hippy MC’s “Dangerookipawaa Freestyle” was titled in honor of Anthony “Top Dawg” Tiffith, CEO of Top Dawg Entertainment. Ab-Soul’s new freestyle is just shy of hitting a full four minutes. No complaints here though on the length of the freestyle, as it serves as a justified example of true hip hop. The fresh new track produced by Devin Williams is currently available on all streaming platforms. Check out the following lyrics in which Ab-Soul acknowledges the late rapper Craig Mack.

Lil Yachty Connects with Drake & DaBaby for New Single and Short Film "Oprah's Bank Account"

To kickoff Lil Yachty’s upcoming album ‘Lil Boat 3’ he has released a new song entitled, “Oprah’s Bank Account”. The new track has been presented to fans with an accompanying short film. The film directed by Director X, features Yachty dressed up as Oprah with skits that include Drake and DaBaby as well. This video is lighthearted and provides a great laugh for viewers; reminding us all to remember to have fun. It’s also entertaining to see a music video that deviates away from traditional music video treatments. The new song is also really catchy, I won’t be surprised if it ends up sparking a #BOPRAH Challenge.

Veteran Rapper Jadakiss Pays Tribute to Beloved Friend on New Album ‘Ignatius’

Jadakiss’ fifth solo studio album ‘Ignatius’ is named after a longtime friend, Ignatius Maurice “Icepick” Jackson, who passed away from colon cancer in 2017. In an interview with The Breakfast Club on Power 105.1 FM, Jadakiss reflected on his late friend and revealed how his friend always encouraged him to excel and explore more facets of his life past music. Jadakiss’ new album includes post production with live instruments to elevate the sounds that his friend, Ignatius often suggested he tried. The artists that are featured on this project are also some people that his friend Ignatius loved. 

Curating this album in memoriam of a great friend, has quite possibly created one of Jadakiss’ best work. Musically and lyrically, every song has an increased level of maturity and depth that differentiates this album from previous projects. Another surprise on ‘Ignatius’ is that Jadakiss takes a shot at singing on tracks “Keep it 100”, and “Angels Getting Pedicured”. Regardless of whether or not a person may be a fan of “street rap”, they would still conclude that this album is a substantial body of work with incredible production.

Nicki Minaj Admits That She Regrets Some of Her Songs From Her Discography

In a candid interview for Pollstar Live!, Nicki Minaj and her manager Irving Azoff discussed everything from her career to future business ventures, and personal growth. 

Nicki revealed that there are many songs from her discography that she regrets. The three main songs that Nicki mentioned were “Anaconda”, “Your Love”, and “Starships”; all of which were major songs on the Billboard Charts. It’s quite intriguing to know that Nicki looks back and wishes she wouldn't have made them; at this point in her career Nicki may be leading her music in a new direction completely or she may just return to her original sound.

In addition, to her music career, Nicki also shared her intentions to start a fitness clothing line as a result of her realizing she wanted to get back to living a healthier lifestyle. Her reasoning for the new venture is as follows,

“Because I have been going to the gym. I’m proud to say I’ve lost 13 pounds. I didn’t realize that I was gaining that much weight until I looked at the pictures…One day you just look at yourself like. ‘Who’s this b****? When did this s*** happen? What the f***?’ And so I swear I’m this gym person now… and I want to have sneakers and athletic wear”.

During the interview, Nicki also revealed that she may leak the full version of new song “Yikes” that she previewed 3 days ago, this Friday!

Lil Nas X Shuts Down Haters with Billy Ray Cyrus on the "Old Town Road" Remix

Montero Hill, known by the stage name “Lil Nas X” has continued to spark controversy within the world of music with his hit single “Old Town Road”. Lil Nas X initially released “Old Town Road” back in December of 2018.

Since its release in 2018, “Old Town Road” has climbed up the Billboard charts due to the assist of people creating viral videos with the track on a plethora of digital media platforms. People across the world, have utilized platforms such as TikTok, Twitter, and Facebook to create funny memes and videos.

As “Old Town Road” continued to ascend on the Billboard charts as a country song in March of 2018, Billboard ultimately decided to remove the song from the charts. Billboard supported the decision to remove the song by acknowledging that although ‘Old Town Road’ “incorporates references to country and cowboy imagery, it does not embrace enough elements of today’s country music to chart in its current version”.

Considering this statement by Billboard, the decision to pull “Old Town Road” does not suffice. “Old Town Road” samples Nine Inch Nails “34 Ghosts IV” which begins with the clear introduction of a banjo on the beat. The banjo is an instrument that originated in West Africa and was later brought over to America during the slave trade. Since the creation of Country Music in the 1920s, the banjo stood at the forefront of the basis of what makes the distinctive tone of the country music genre. The Country Music Hall of Fame sites the banjo as “visually and aurally one of the most recognizable instruments associated with country music”.

So why is it that Lil Nas X’s “Old Town Road” doesn’t make the cut? Could it be that it threatens the current state of country music and its artists? Lil Nas X is blurring the lines between Hip Hop and Country music and has done an effortless job at maintaining the perfect balance. For the nay sayers, Lil Nas X has come back harder with the assist of Country music Legend Billy Ray Cyrus. The remix to “Old Town Road” has been released under the Country music genre officially. And let’s just all the agree that together, these two artists have united to let everyone know that this song is indeed country!

Not only is the remix to “Old Town Road” infectious, but it emphasizes the essence of country music with the addition of Billy Ray Cyrus’ southern drawl. Furthermore, every genre in music is consistently evolving and changing which naturally occurs with time. It is also imperative to recognize that Hip Hop and R&B are genres that have openly accepted the experimentation of their sound from people with varying demographics. The “Old Town Road” remix featuring Cyrus debuted as the No 1. song globally on iTunes. Reiterating that this song is here to stay as an imprint on Country music history and I look forward to seeing it soar back up the Hot Country Music chart on Billboard.
